Parchment, vellum, or paper: what's the difference?

Parchment is writing material made from prepared animal skin. Vellum is traditionally the finer grade of parchment made from calfskin. Paper is a different substance altogether: matted plant fiber, formed sheet by sheet on a screen.

In practice the first two words blur. "Vellum" is used loosely for any good parchment, English and French usage disagree, and even careful catalogs vary. When a description needs to be safe rather than specific, it says membrane: animal skin, species unstated. If you remember one distinction, make it skin versus plant: parchment and vellum are hides; paper never was.

Parchment: skin made to be written on

Parchment is skin, most often sheep or calf, that has been soaked in a lime bath, scraped free of hair and flesh, and dried under tension on a frame. The stretching is what makes it parchment rather than leather: dried taut, the fibers reorganize into a flat, springy, opaque, ink-receptive sheet that lasts for a thousand years. It is not tanned; leather is a different craft with a different result.

The hair side may show follicles and a different color or texture from the flesh side. Codices may follow the arrangement called Gregory's rule, with like sides facing across an opening. Exceptions can reflect original construction, regional practice, repair, replacement, or rebinding, so a violation is evidence to investigate rather than proof of misbinding.

Vellum: the word that causes the trouble

Strictly, vellum is calfskin parchment; the word shares a root with veal. Calf gives the finest and smoothest sheets, so "vellum" drifted into meaning "high-quality parchment" regardless of species, and it has been used that way for centuries. The finest grade of all, uterine vellum, so thin it is almost translucent, appears in thirteenth-century pocket Bibles. Whether it was truly made from unborn calfskin was argued for decades, until peptide-fingerprint analysis of pocket Bibles (Fiddyment et al., PNAS, 2015) found ordinary skins of common species, prepared to extraordinary thinness.

Because the terms overlap, do not infer species from vellum alone. Visual examination can support a cautious identification, while methods such as peptide mass fingerprinting can test species attribution. “Membrane” leaves the species unstated.

Paper: felted plant fiber

Paper reached Europe through long transmission and production networks that included the Islamic world. European manuscript paper was commonly made from processed textile rags, including linen and hemp, with fiber mixtures that varied by place and period. It was not limited to linen.

The screen leaves fingerprints, and they are the paper scholar's best evidence:

Parchment has none of these. Held to the light, skin shows cloudy variation and veining, maybe a scar or a hole where an insect bit the living animal; paper shows the mold's tidy grid.

Telling them apart in photographs

At the desk you can touch the leaf; in a photograph you read the surface. A stippled, slightly yellow side alternating with a smooth pale one, opening by opening, is the follicle pattern of parchment. Chain lines or a watermark in raking or transmitted light settle the question the other way: paper.

Damage can supply supporting evidence but is not a stand-alone identification test. Parchment often cockles with moisture and may preserve scars, holes, or sewn repairs. Paper can tear along fibers and may show mold, stains, or foxing. Worm damage and later repairs occur in both materials.

Why it matters

Support contributes to dating and localization when combined with script, language, contents, construction, decoration, provenance, and comparative material. Paper manuscripts existed in parts of Europe before the fourteenth century and far earlier elsewhere. A watermark or mixed paper-and-parchment structure is evidence to interpret in context, not a date or place on its own.

Support is also worth recording in your own image catalog: a manuscript that mixes parchment and paper quires rewards a note on which is which, and transmitted-light shots of watermarks deserve to be filed with the folio they belong to.
